The Eyes Have It: PixelOptics Awarded DoD Contract to Develop 'SuperVision'

01.11.06 - PixelOptics Inc., an electronic eyewear developer, has received a $3.5 million award from the Department of Defense to develop technology called SuperVision that the company says can enhance vision beyond the current 20/20 standard, maybe even beyond 20/10.

The technology, said Dr. Ron Blum, president and CEO of Pixel, is being designed to provide military forces "with a competitive combat advantage and reduce the number of friendly fire incidents."

The Pixel technology uses sensors and electro-active transparent material to alter the the character of the glass used in eyeglasses. Controlled by a microchip, the glasses can dynamically change their focus "in ways not possible before," said project program manager Dr. Dwight Duston, Pixel's executive vice president of research and development and military programs.

The chip technology also allows the glasses to adjust the wearer's focus based on the environmental surroundings.
